Analysis of The Behemoth’s third game

The Behemoth, creators of Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers have now released a trailer of their third game. Considering that it’s going to be released in 2010 it’s very unusual that we get to see so much gameplay at this early stage. So I thought that it would be an interesting exercise to try and guess what mechanics we are going to see in the final game. I don’t really know if The Behemoth released a detailed press release or not, but for the purposes of this post I’m going to avoid any news sites until I’m done writing.

Eh... what?
Poor little thing doesn't have a name yet. Sure, he's filthy rich, but he's devastated, just look at those tears.

Alright, so after looking at the official site I can safely say that they haven’t released any additional details apart from these:

Release Date: See Trailer. Console : No specifics yet. Price: No idea. Game Details: Coming Soon.

Perfect! So, now I’d advice you to watch the trailer and make your own assumptions, then come back, read the rest of the entry and compare notes.

Seriously, take a look at the trailer.

Go ahead.

All done? No? It’s okay, I’ll wait.

And now? You sure? You are not trying to trick me, are you? Alright, I’m going to have to believe you. For now. Let the guessing games begin!

The obvious:

It’s a platformer and brawler, kind of like Smash Brothers but with far more varied modes. There’s double and triple jumps, at least for certain characters. Enemies can be freezed, as in trapped inside a huge cube of ice. You can/must collect giant jewels. There’s multiplayer, online and probably local. There are co-op and vs modes. There’s a mode with a timer. There’s a mode in which you color the scenery. There’s a lack of UI apart from the said timer (no health bars). There are some animals (at least one) that you can ride. In the video this mechanic was used to avoid a floor filled with spikes. There’s parallax backgrounds and the scenery is always completely divided into cubes.

The probable:

There are/will be AI enemies and partners. There’s going to be more variety with the scenery than what we’ve seen. Team based modes. The characters can grab and throw objects. There’s probably going to be a race mode.

The non-sequiturs:

Apparently you can pick up fallen enemies. You can also throw a ball of your own color as a weapon… I suppose. Frisbees as explosive weapons! Crazy Russian guy as a playable character! Pyramid head makes an appearance as a character, although this time he is sporting three pairs of black eyes. There are soccer balls! There’s an excrement-looking power-up and bodies of brown… liquid.

My own take:

For me, the coloring of cubes is the most interesting mechanic. If I were to make a wild guess, I’d say that in this mode the characters can’t die, but they sure can get on each other’s nerves. The point of this mode would be to color the majority of the cubes with your team’s color. But the interesting twist is that a cube recently painted can be repainted again. Only after a specific amount of time does the paint “dry”, a state in which it cannot be repainted anymore. This leads to the interesting scenario we see in the video in which a character is painting a lot of cubes green and then a second later another character repaints them pink.

Another mode, that after some constant watching became apparent, is soccer. A violent, weird type of soccer where everything goes. There’s a specially light-weight soccer ball and the goals are only one square in size. The matches have a time limit, but I suppose that there will be other configurations (the first one to reach 3 goals wins, for example). I’d be surprised if this mode isn’t team based.

Overall, I’d say that this is a multiplayer focused game, with some touches of single-player here and there.

And that’s it, I don’t think there’s much more to squeeze out of the trailer, but I welcome any other wild mass guessing.
